Investigating Morgellons Syndrome
Fibres: The Key to the Morgellons Controversy
The key to the Morgellons controversy seems to centre around the issue of the fibres, for it is this aspect of the condition that appears to be the most fantastical and which therefore seems to make the prospect of patients being delusional more likely, theoretically at least. Indeed it has been said that Morgellons is Delusional Parasitosis (DP) with fibres replacing insects. All the other symptoms of the condition skin irritation and lesions, the neurological/psychological aspect are present in identical or very similar form in other diseases or conditions, like Lyme, CFS, DP and numerous others.
Fibres though are unique to Morgellons and, as real, testable, physical objects, surely hold the key to the question of whether Morgellons is a new, or at least previously unrecognized disease, or if it is some combination of hysteria, DP and various other already identified maladies.
The reports regarding the fibres stem from the sober to the fantastical, but even the most restrained reports are suggestive of science fiction. Is it really possible that a disease could lead to the production of hardy, entangled, heat resistance, unidentifiable fibres inside the body?
Reports of these details in the popular press and on the internet have led to various theories, such as that nanobots minute self replicating machines that enjoy a form of group intelligence, can communicate with each other and often come complete with antennae to receive/send messages to their progenitors - are responsible for the disease. Inevitably military/government bio-weapons programmes, often involving chem-trails, have also featured heavily, as have aliens and, perhaps more believably, genetically modified food. But all these ideas, as you might expect, are pure speculation, there is no evidence at present to back any of those theories.
So, what is the evidence for the existence of fibres?
The internet is awash with photographs of 'Morgellons fibres', from sufferers, scientists and sceptics alike. However, as Morgellons is theoretically a new (disease) entity nobody knows what a Morgellons fibre should look like, hence simply because a photograph 'glitters' (ie. is labelled as 'Morgellons fibre') it is not necessarily 'gold' (ie. a Morgellons fibre)
The fibres are microscopic in size and to the untrained eye all the photographs look alien and certainly not something that one would expect to occur naturally in the human body. However magnifying anything to an unnaturally high resolution will make it appear quite bizarre and, indeed, some of the items photographed, magnified and posted online were, in fact, everyday lint and human hair. What was needed was some professional testing to determine what the supposed fibres were made up of. It should, after all, be relatively straightforward for a professional scientist to distinguish between a piece of lint from clothing and an organic fibre grown as a result a parasitic invasion of the human body.
